I'm on 1933 in the biography draft. That means: less than ten years left of Musil's life, but three chapters: one from 1933-38 in Vienna, then one from 38-42 in exile, then one about Martha's work to publish Musil's works. Also a small epilogue planned.

I am excited to share this stunning essay by Kelly Swope just published at Marginalia Review of Books on the poetry of Hannah Arendt (translated by Samantha Rose Hill and Genese Grill). I hope you enjoy his writing as much as I do! marginaliareviewofbooks.com/post/thinking-…

"The free play of thinking in twilight is full of dangers and consolations." A beautiful, rich, insightful essay on Arendt, her lineage from Hölderlin through Rilke, and the vital importance of poetic thinking in the human battle against totalitarianisms.

How does a biographer feel when she has come to the last day of her subject's life? Astounded at how time piles words upon words. Frightened to start revisions. Moved by the profundity of the subject's death but also excited in an unseemly sort of way.

"you are a tree and literature wraps around you, marking your years." Wonderful musings and rich windings by Greg Gerke / Socrates on the Beach , and oh, I am so honored as always to be honored by him and put in such fine company.

I've just come to appreciate Henry James! The Ambassadors is stunning. Neurotic up-tightness of the characters still grates, but in this case, release into beauty redeems. A grand indictment of American utilitarianism & celebration of European aesthetic aliveness!
