High agency isn’t just competency. It’s being competent at assessing your competency, and competent at increasing that competency Low agency isn’t just incompetency. It’s being incompetent at assessing your incompetency, and incompetent at decreasing that incompetency Nuanced.

The best argument I've heard for agency being a controllable trait is how much it can vary in one person. The high agency CEO who is low agency with their anger management issues. The high agency engineer who is low agency in their dating life. You have agency over your agency.

I have a theory that everyone consumed a piece of media between 9-13 years old that is the foundation of their entire worldview. Everything they learnt since was stacked on top of this. It's a great dinner question to ask people.

When I listen to deep house music, my mind thinks about my friends winning. When I listen to hip-hop, my mind thinks about my enemies losing.

Once per week, I randomly laugh at how seriously I'm taking reality. I'll have a tight face ruminating on a social status game. And then I remember everyone was a sperm cell that fertilised an egg, who arrived screaming with no sense of self just figuring things out on the fly.

Underrated social skill: Activation energy. The common social protocol is to walk into a room and mirror everyone's energy. My favourite people come in like an energy wrecking ball and set the tone of the whole room. Surprisingly easy to do because everyone has mirror neurons.

If you've recently quit booze, don't lecture people about sobriety. Live a life so interesting that people ask you how. Then tell them. It's 10x more persuasive. Nothing makes people want to chug a cold beer faster than a sober influencer whose sole personality is being sober.

Australia has tall poppy syndrome like the UK. This is ridiculous. At least Brits have Vitamin D deprivation and World War 2 bombings to blame for our cynicism. Imagine waking up near Bondi Beach and then hating on your neighbour for getting a promotion.

Great dinner question to ask people: What have you changed your mind about in the last 12 months? The pain is still recent. They've not spoken it out loud to many people. You get access to their cutting-edge consciousness or recent rumination cycles. Recommend it.

Give Type A personalities Type B solutions in Type A dressing. Don't tell them exercise or a nap will make them feel better. Tell them it will enhance their creativity. Sneak the Type B upside of joy in a Type A Trojan horse. Placebo also weirdly works when done to yourself.

Dayum. My essay on high agency has now apparently been visited over 1 million times -- all from word of mouth. I get a screenshot shot everyday of people sharing it in Slack and WhatsApp groups. Brain rot hasn't killed long-form reading just yet. highagency.com

Language hack: Replace "work hard" with "focus hard". There's millions of people working hard each day. Few are focusing hard each day. Subtle change of language. It Jedi mind tricks my brain to get rid of the bathwater (work) but keep the baby (focus).

You defeated 200 million sperm cells in a swimming competition to be born. Why are you letting your mind convince you that you aren’t special?!

A good rule of thumb is to assume you're forgetting 1000x more than you consciously notice. You don't realise how much you've forgotten because if you did, you wouldn't have forgotten it. You didn't notice that you stopped checking voicemail on your phone because it faded away.
