The bureau, 11 people at its peak, operated in DC from 1946 until it closed December 2008. San Diego, now the 8th largest city, needs reporters in Washington.

Terry Eastland was known for his humor and decency The San Diego Union-Tribune and for his high ethical standards at DoJ. A good colleague who was a throwback to an earlier Washington.

Bill Cowher was also born and raised in this circle as was John Harbaugh, both Super Bowl winning head coaches.
