Every learning moment shapes brain circuitry, but are we turning educational settings into "stress zones" instead of "learning spaces?" We need a system that nurtures curiosity that helps our young people grow and supports their mental health & builds cortex capabilities. 🧠🌱

Modern-day parents should read this. We have a technology-riddled childhood that is interfering with children's development, socially, emotionally & cognitively in so many ways. “The day you give your kids a phone, Is the day their childhood ends” Jonathan Haidt

In schools working with pupils who have trauma, stories often start with timing. "See when I was 5." We then we start to identify their unmet needs, emotional deprivation, you are now aware of the trauma. You now need responsive action to help dose down their stress response 🧠🌱

Supporting pupils with trauma dysregulation, their nervous systems have been shaped by everything they have gone through "patterns of protection"that kept them alive. We can help them teach their nervous system something new. Self-regulation,coping strategies, managing emotions🧠🌱

Our young people often grow up in homes where emotional chaos gets transmitted, raised in chaotic & threatening environments. When they grow up under these sorts of conditions, they become masters of emotional regulation for everyone else’s nervous systems but their own. 🧠🌱

Your nervous system is the lens on how you viewed the world.A body adapting to the conditions it was brought up in. Emotions, reactions & symptoms, a body holding onto memories your mind is trying to forget.🧠🌱

When supporting pupils with multiple ACEs,there is no quick fix solution,we also can't change the past. Its about the little interactions, being present & creating space to help them feel & grow.Opening up conversations that are healthy & supportive. Transformation takes time.🧠🌱

I am working on a new presentation. This workshop supports nurturing approaches through a trauma responsive lens. Supporting the wider school community on "How to cultiivate ,create & nurture trauma responsive approaches in supporting children well-being."🧠🌱

Childhood trauma doesn’t just stay in the past ,it becomes frozen in the nervous system as unresolved wounds shaping how we respond to stress. When we teach pupils about what is going on in their bodies, they can begin to support themselves with self-regulatory resources.🧠🌱

Pupils with a background of Adverse Childhood Experiences without a buffer are likely to get dysregulated more easily.Their pre-frontal cortex has less connectivity, finding it more difficult to regulate emotions because their brain has been wired up for keeping them safe.🧠🌱

Micromanagement bhvr strategies encourage pupils to suppress their emotions & robs them of the opportunity to learn how to regulate them. They need to be able to express their emotions without fear of punishment. Instead, give them the opportunity to learn how to regulate them🧠🌱

Pre-frontal cortex (executive functions) It is involved in attention, short-term memory, regulating emotions, self-control, etc .Remember, the cortex doesn't reach full maturity until young adulthood 25+.This is why teens don't have full neurobiological control of emotions.🧠🌱

Behaviour management is about connection, not control. Punitive approaches only teach pupils to conform ,bury their emotions & comply with adults who seek to control them.Connection is much more powerful than control. Always be the person the pupil remembers.🧠🌱

Not all ACEs are identified as trauma. It's what was lacking when it happened & how the brain & nervous system responded to it. Was there an absence of acknowledgement, support, being held, supported & comforted. This leaves children with a nervous system focussed on inner chaos🧠🌱

Huge misunderstanding of what trauma informed/responsive practices are. Let me be clear here. Trauma informed & responsive approaches does not mean no boundaries or consequences, certainly not for homework.Trauma behaviours present a lens we can either choose to look or not🧠🌱
