💜 Getting Girls into STEM: Practical Ideas for Parents & Teachers We know that policy, investment, opportunities, and curriculum are vital to tackle gender inequality in STEM. But there are also small, everyday actions that parents, teachers, and youth leaders can take (THREAD)

1️⃣ Start Early Introduce STEM through fun, hands-on activities — toys, games, apps, and simple experiments. Encourage curiosity by asking questions like "How does this work?", and let girls get involved in building, creating, and problem-solving from a young age (THREAD 1/8)

2️⃣ Show Real Role Models Share stories of diverse women in STEM — from famous scientists to local engineers. Invite guest speakers, watch videos, and recommend books and podcasts such as Hidden Figures or Ada Twist, Scientist to show girls who they can be (THREAD 2/7)

3️⃣ Challenge Stereotypes Call out gender stereotypes — STEM is for everyone. Use inclusive language like "scientists" or "engineers" instead of "he/him", and encourage girls to take risks, make mistakes, and stay curious — that's what STEM is all about! (THREAD 3/7)

4️⃣ Encourage Hands-On Experiences Support girls to join STEM clubs, coding classes, competitions, or maker spaces where they can experiment and learn by doing. Look for girls-focused programmes like Stemettes, Girls Who Code, and WISE (THREAD 4/7)

5️⃣ Connect STEM to Real Life Show how STEM links to issues they care about — climate change, healthcare, tech for good. When girls see how STEM makes a difference in the world, it feels relevant and exciting (THREAD 5/7)

6️⃣ Build Confidence and Celebrate Effort Praise effort, creativity, and problem-solving, not just "right answers." Help girls see their progress and remind them that STEM is about trying, learning, and improving — not about getting it perfect the first time (THREAD 6/7)

7️⃣ Talk About Career Possibilities Help girls see the huge range of careers STEM can lead to — from space exploration to medicine to gaming. Share real stories of young women from all backgrounds succeeding in STEM so they can picture themselves in those roles (THREAD 7/7)
