We need more clinical academics. However, academic trainees are deeply concerned about the new curricula changes on their academic career. See the results here: catch.ac.uk/training-caree… Thanks to everyone who took part in the survey.

Pleased that The BMA has affirmed its commitment to pay parity for clinical academics with their NHS counterparts. Motion very effectively moved by Academic Trainees co-chair Jonathan Gibb

We fundamentally disagree with the decision by the UK Health bodies to move the Specialised Foundation Programme into the PIA system from 2025 and will fight for students by resisting this change in any way that we can. Read the full statement šŸ‘‡bma.org.uk/news-and-opini…

I would like BMA Students to know how very hard many senior clinical academics across a large number of institutions have tried to prevent this outcome. We feel your pain and will continue to lobby on your behalf and the future of clinical academic medicine #AcademicTwitter

"We see the proportion of consultants who are academically qualified is going down, and the proportion of consultants that can do research is going down. It’s a big concern for UK faculties of medicine that it’s harder to get clinical academics" - John-Arne RĆøttingen Wellcome

Alongside BMA Medical Academics, we've written to NHS England expressing our concerns about delays to guidance on SFP. We have reiterated SFP recruitment must be a fair and consistent merit based selection process and we will continue to work with relevant stakeholders to ensure this.

We need to encourage more medical students to pursue careers in academic medicine. This is critical at a time when medical academia is facing a workforce crisis. It's time to listen to students, academics, and the stakeholders involved in supporting research delivery. The BMA

The DDRB have some serious questions to answer. Even after reforms, there’s been a failure to recommend restoring pay. We saw UK govt put constraints in the remit letter, set an affordability context, the report was late and then held on to by UK govt for weeks 1/2

BMA Students and BMA Medical Academics are pleased to report that, following lobbying, NHS England has agreed to form a working group with the BMA within the next 8 to 12 weeks to decide the future of SFP recruitment. We will continue to push for fair and merit-based recruitment to SFP

This Medical Schools Council report medschools.ac.uk/latest/news/ur… sets off further alarm bells on the state of Britain’s medical academic workforce. The Medical Schools Council data worryingly shows the entire pipeline is at threat - with both early career and senior roles declining. 1/

Consultant clinical academics and senior academic GPs who are members of the BMA should have received this also and are eligible to take part. Check your junk folder or your details on bma.org.uk/my-bma if you haven’t received the email.
