A2) Depth and Complexity is important for GT kiddos because their perfectionism can lead to safe, shallow thinking, and that's not at all what we want. #gtchat

A2) When we expect (dare I say "demand") complexity in their thinking, they avoid boredom as well. It's a powerful, useful strategy. #gtchat

A2) The word "engagement" is eduspeak for "the student's abilities are matched to the task and the student is physical and emotionally healthy." Depth and Complexity are keys to this match. #gtchat

A2) I'm not a fan of the idea of "passion" or "passion projects." Any good teacher can awaken passion for any topic. That's just good teaching. I like the idea of going deeply into a topic that seems simple to find its complexity. #gtchat

A3) I think the most important thing for gifted students to understand is that raw intelligence, like genetics, can only take you so far. It must be awakened and fed. You can have the gene for something, but that doesn't mean it's expressed. #gtchat

A3) We must make sure that gifted students know that ability and achievement are not the same. They probably did nothing to earn their ability, but their achievement is a different story. #gtchat

A3) We need gifted students to understand that they may have other challenges that interfere with their learning, even if their raw intelligence is higher than average (even much higher). Gifted does not equal ease of learning necessarily. #gtchat

Just a tip: Ian Byrd and I use emoji 🌳instead of the JTaylor icons for ease of use with tech and student comfort. The icons are great, but you don't have to have them. Use what works for you. #gtchat

A4) The most effective way to introduce Depth and Complexity prompts is with deliberate instruction. I don't believe in putting up posters or slapping on pictures unless the kids know what they represent. #gtchat

A4) If possible, we should take some time to introduce the framework, explaining its purpose and what it looks like. I use the idea of how we are surrounded by symbols that we all agree mean something & we know that meaning. #gtchat

A5) The best thing parents can do to encourage deep and complex thinking is to have conversations with their kids. Do not under any circumstances allow screens to take the place of parenting. #gtchat

Lisa Van Gemert (@gifted_guru) 's Twitter Profile Photo

A5) We're all horrified by the experiments with the wire monkey mothers, but we've voluntarily turned screens into wire monkey mothers instead of giving kids 3D parents. It's a problem. #gtchat

I cannot let this night end without a huge thank you and recognition of gtchatmod. She has had a tremendous impact on gifted education and supported parents and teachers in incredible ways. #gtchat

Lisa Van Gemert (@gifted_guru) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Without gtchatmod we would not have the voices in gifted education that we do. Her work is invaluable. Lisa, you are so appreciated and respected. I raise my glass to you tonight and always. #gtchat

As we end, I'd encourage all teachers to explore the Depth and Complexity framework to take advantage of all it offers teachers. It's not well done by AI (yet), so read some stuff written by humans! #gtchat

Driving home from my surgeon's office today, I was moved to tears by the beauty of the daffodils planted by City of Colleyville. William Wordsworth had you in mind... When all at once I saw a crowd, A host, of golden daffodils... Truly lovely. Thank you.

My great-grandparents are buried in New Trier, MN here in the cemetery of St. Mary's. Their headstones are in German because that was their language. How powerful a reminder to me of the need to serve English Learners. No filter - just a gorgeous Spring day.
