A decent size shallow crustal earthquake, strike slip faulting mechanism, most likely related to the activity or Cimandiri Fault in West Java, the shake felt all the way to Jakarta, report of damages start to flowing in, mostly from the Cianjur, Garut and Sukabumi regencies.

Today's M7.8 earthquake in Turkey occurred in the East Anatolian Fault zone. Although this fault is a known hazard, the quake is unusual. Today's M7.8 released >2x as much energy as the largest recorded quakes in the region (M7.4). Image credit: Kyle Bradley 1/

Today's M7.8 #earthquake in #Turkey also generated a #tsunami. The tsunami height is 30 cm in Erdemli (see the picture). We expect a maximum tsunami coastal runup of up to around 1.5 m (or 2 m) in some places near the epicenter.

Today's M 7.4 quake off Taiwan's eastern coast was due to reverse faulting at the Eurasia & Philippine Sea plate boundary (to be confirmed). Situated on the Philippine Plate's western edge, Taiwan is characterised by complex geology and tectonic activity. Earth Observatory SG Asian School Of The Environment NTU Singapore

How complex is the structure in the East Coast of #Taiwan? From a perspective of high-quality relocated eqs and velocity model, we can tell you that it's in a mass. The #earthquake last morning showed that we are still underestimating the complicity. earth.sinica.edu.tw/en/research/fi…
