"International law is only law if we demand that our allies, not only our adversaries, obey it. If we apply it selectively, we cannot expect others to respect it, or to respect us." theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

My comment in Pakistan's Express Tribune magazine about preventive military strikes on Iran: "What’s deeply troubling is the way Western democracies are entertaining these justifications - a legal stance they’d never accept from adversaries" tribune.com.pk/story/2552099/…

I do so worry about unexamined bias in political leaders who consider the (contested) possibility of an Iranian nuclear weapon an intolerable threat to Israel without examining what the actually existent Israeli nuclear weapons might look like for Iran & the rest of the region.

Still no mention of the imperative need to comply with the principles underlying the UN Charter. 'And respect for international law is critical' doesn't cut it. Fail. Resubmit this assignment having rewritten it in accordance with the key provisions of the Treaty of the EU.

The trouble European countries find themselves in at the moment: they want to do away with international law to support that "dirty work that is being done for us", but international law is all over their treaties and constitutions, and these are hard to change.

“So, bottom line – all of these arguments are really trying to dress up purely preventative action into something more legally respectable. These arguments are not just weak, they are fatally weak.” Peak Marko. Hang it in the Louvre.

"On the basis of the assessments made by the independent int'l institutions cited above, there are indications that Israel would be in breach of its human rights obligations under Article 2 of the #EU-#Israel Association Agreement." They know. They knew. drive.google.com/file/d/15nlwBv…

People wax lyrical about Bluesky and how nice the people there are, but I shared this thread there and got mostly responses along the lines of "Actually, I agree" and "Amnesty International is a Putinist organisation" 🙄

In Germany, comparing German politicians to Hitler is often portrayed as deeply offensive for watering down the Nazis, but like many, this rule is pretty selectively applied

It’s been really troubling to witness how razor thin Germany’s commitment to multilateralism and rule of law actually turned out to be, still find it hard to believe very few seem to be thinking through the implications of it, giving it a careless shrug at best
