Good to see a Small Ranunculus caterpillar on Prickly Lettuce in Llandaff today, as I missed the adults this year. #MothsMatter

A wildlife highlight from our family summer holiday on Isles of Scilly was this Southern Green Shieldbug (Nezara viridula) nymph on St Martin's - seemingly the first Scilly record of this species. Thanks to Tristan Bantock & Bob Dawson for the info.

Jersey Tiger new for the Llandaff North garden last night. There have been quite a few Cardiff records this month but I thought I'd missed out while I was away on hols. I don't mind the tattiness of this individual, still a stunning moth. #MothsMatter

These Agonopterix subpropinquella adults emerged recently, reared from larvae found in rolled leaves of Greater Knapweed on Gower in June. Not the hoped-for A. pallorella, but still nice to see, especially the dark-fronted form. #MothsMatter

Sciota hostilis is only known to breed at 2 sites in the UK. We failed to find larvae at the Warwicks site y'day - no records there since 2011 (concerning, though it can be hard to find). Good to see several other uncommon Aspen associates though - see captions on photos.

A pic of the 'big blue' on its release this evening, taken by my daughter. It flew straight up in the air, up and up, until we lost sight of it. Nice to see one in such good condition. Only 2nd record here in the Llandaff North garden, and 1st since 2020. #MothsMatter

Coleophora taeniipennella larval case on Sharp-flowered Rush near Draethen. Never looked for these before, spotted a patch of the plant and there it was, found within seconds. Why can't it always be this easy?! (I suppose that would be boring) Only 3rd VC41 record. #MothsMatter

Led a bryophyte walk for WildlifeTrustSWWales 🦡🐬 Bridgend Group today, but the mosses & liverworts were upstaged by caterpillars. Lichened form of Scalloped Hazel on Ash, and Pebble Hook-tip on Alder. #MothsMatter

Several occupied leaf-mines of Stigmella anomalella on our rose bushes this week. Despite being found in the garden pretty much every year I've never once seen the adult moth! #MothsMatter

Don't think I posted this at the time. Hope you're not squeamish. Near Monmouth in May, a Dun-bar caterpillar busily munching on a Common Quaker caterpillar on a willow leaf. Dun-bar larvae well known to have a taste for other moth larvae as well as tree leaves. #MothsMatter
