Having an ‘open door policy’ is only part of the equation. The reality is, only a few come through it, particularly the more you’re promoted. It’s important to go to people, test what you’re being told, engage staff and partners, and actually listen. If not, nothing will change.

I am so pleased to see this posthumous award for Special Constable Shields, a retired Police Inspector (mine). He epitomised everything of a good leader - compassion, commitment, drive to do the right thing and the ability to listen to everyone around him. RIP Sir. ScotsPolFed

Went out last night to meet up with some volunteers I know from HM Coastguard to learn about their invaluable work and ended up witnessing it first hand when a vessel lost power. Incredible response by all the volunteers, including RNLI 👏

With two weeks until I officially retire from the police, I was proud to be invited to inspect Class 3 at their Pass Out and it was so great to hear from them and see their enthusiasm. It was humbling to be at the home of Scottish Policing, where my own career started in 1996.
