Today, we celebrate James Baldwin on what would have been his 100th birthday.   He was an alum of DeWitt Clinton High School, where he edited the school newspaper and participated in the literary club.   He embodied the potential I see in all our students—our future leaders.

Born in Harlem, Baldwin tapped into his passion for knowledge and grew up to become a renowned writer, a civil rights activist, and lifelong learner. As we build a culture of literacy throughout our city with #NYCReads, it's critical to study literary greats like James Baldwin.
