Tony was a great teacher, advisor and friend. Without his sage advice I would not have been here this week in Stockholm for the Nobel ceremonies. He had an uncanny ability to ask great questions that pushed me in new directions. I will miss him.

Ben Deaner from UCL pointed me to this directed acyclical graph (one of many) in Griliches and Mason, Journal of Political Economy, 1972. It reminded me of the graph in Tinbergen, Review of Economic Studies, 1940. Two mostly forgotten early examples of DAGs in the econ lit.

Adrien Mogenet Absolutely! In such settings, guido imbens et al. have done great work proposing improved experimental designs (arxiv.org/abs/2112.13495) In the opinion paper, I argue that even in simpler settings, SUTVA violations commonly occur due to the ML models themselves interfering.

I had a wonderful visit to Kyoto, attending the STS forum, and giving a seminar at Kyoto University. Here my hosts, including dean Ida at the lunch in a fabulous restaurant.

42 years ago I started as an undergraduate at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam. I left after 3 years, before graduating, but this week I did get a degree from Rotterdam, an honorary one at the 110th dies natalis. It was fun to be back and meet so many students and faculty!

Last week I had the pleasure of meeting a bunch of Stanford alumnae in Amsterdam, at an event organized by Lian Boerma and Rick Amado. Unexpected bonus: the event was at the former lab of Van 't Hoff, the first (1901) Nobel laureate in chemistry. Stanford Graduate School of Business

I spent a very enjoyable day at Spelman College last week. I gave a couple of lectures and got to talk to Spelman and Morehouse students about paths to careers in economics, including predoc and phd programs, and some of the programs at Stanford, including gsb.stanford.edu/programs/phd/a…

Finally got to congratulate in person my former colleague and 2023 Nobel laureate in economics, Claudia Goldin. Always fun to be back in Littauer Center.
