“Purchases and shipments of U.S. food aid worth over $340 million — including rice, wheat and soybeans — have been paused during Trump’s foreign-aid freeze…That has left hundreds of tons of American-grown wheat stranded in Houston alone.” washingtonpost.com/politics/2025/…

If you know an academic scientist in the US, give them a hug tonight. Florian breaks down why this will devastate biomedical research in the US. Yet another self-inflicted wound on America’s capacity to lead and standing in the world

Peer review is not perfect, but to the extent it does add value, it tends to rely on the assumption that authors are not flagrantly, confidently lying about what they did I don't know what to do when it takes more human labor to fact-check a paper than to generate it

Is the objective really to abolish medical research in the US and cut off the next generation of scientists? That doesn't benefit anyone. I just don't get it. This is where the graphs came from. 4/4 github.com/dhoconno/repor…

The economy relies on the BEA's accurate estimates of statistics that have stable, longstanding definitions. Businesses and investors need to know what's going on. Interfering with GDP numbers for political reasons will lead to disaster.

Sabotaging scientific and medical research and education hurts our country And targeting universities for political reasons violates everyone's freedom

Trying to put this as simply as possible: Trump sent an innocent man to a foreign prison and is ignoring a Supreme Court order to bring him back. If this stands, he could do the same to anybody in the U.S., we no longer have rights, and the Constitution no longer has meaning.

The Trump administration is proposing to eliminate a major source of funding for research on agriculture Short term, a crisis for our College of Ag at Montana State. Long term, our farmers and ranchers will fall behind This budget is a plan to end American greatness

Today on Volts: Montana has suffered from a severe housing crisis. In response, over the last two sessions, the legislature passed a series of sweeping housing reforms, everything from legalizing ADUs and duplexes to getting rid of parking mandates. I talk with two leg leaders.

Great pod! Really interesting discussion of how YIMBY reforms split the Montana legislature by age rather than by party. The youngs want more homes, the olds want the prerogative to say no.
