Today’s announcement on civil service reform really feels like a government that's just retreading old announcements to try and get a few headlines rather than actually dealing with the substance of how you reform public services and prioritise at times when resources are short.

As I told Victoria Derbyshire, the government are facing big challenges on resources, so there has to be a dialing down of the claims around what AI can do over the short term, and a bit more joined up government.

The PM is talking about a cottage industry of blockers and checkers - those regulators are set up by govt enforcing laws passed by parliament. As I told Nick Eardley, if the PM wants less regulations that’s a political choice, it’s not up to civil servants to decide.

This evening the FDA CPS Section AGM set the section’s priorities and objectives for the year ahead on issues such as excessive workloads, pay, and supporting members with disabilities.

It’s simple, you cannot cut the civil service without consequences to public service. Government must be honest to the public about the choices they are making, which is their right, and the impact of those choices.

The civil service has grown because governments have wanted to do more. Post Brexit the UK needed thousands more border guards to meet the new demands of EU border checks. The government can have a smaller civil service but it will need to decide what it will stop delivering
