The Boris-is-a-winner narrative seems to overlook two things. The candidate he stood against in 2019 literally delivered the worst result his own party had seen since 1936. In other words , he could not have faced an easier opponent. Lab 2022 looks v different to Lab 2019.. 2/2

Great to see this piece led by Hamish published in Nature Communications. I particularly like this figure mapping most cost-effective electricity technologies across levels of energy access (L to R), and how this changes with reliability incentives (middle), and carbon tax (bottom).

Here's a little bit of good news in case you needed it... Britain now gets more power from wind farms than any other source, knocking gas off #1. And yes, that's averaged over the past year, so it's factoring in all those times the wind doesn't blow 🌬️ thetimes.co.uk/article/wind-p…

A new paper by Hamish & @AjayGambhir11 explores the untapped potential of off-grid PV ☀️ as a low-cost 'leapfrog' option to provide energy access to 100s of millions of people across Africa 🌍 by considering carbon pricing & reliability policies. ow.ly/qbKN50RPj9A

Global warming close to 1.5°C begs the question what will happen to the #ParisAgreement 1.5°C goal. Some have declared it deader than a doornail. I suggest a contrasting view: 1.5°C will never die My opinion Project Syndicate Your reflections are very welcome project-syndicate.org/commentary/amb…

Read Hamish's comments for The Guardian about the approval of three giant solar farms and new rules on solar panels by the UK goverment ☀️🔋 ow.ly/urRc50SBhUL

Well will you look at that Actual boss of actual farmers' union says solar farms not a threat to food security (which should have been obvious to anyone who understands that 0.1% of the UK is a small amount)

A remarkable transition: Kenya is Africa's leading country when it comes to renewables. In 2000 fossil fuels contributed 60% to electricity generation. Today it is 6%. In 2023 electricity was from almost 50% geothermal, 20% wind+solar and 22% hydro. @EmberClimate

This is a must-read challenge to the "batteries consume sooo many minerals". Will they? Will they really? Or will chemistry, energy density and recycling mean this concern is rather overblown? OUT TODAY from RMI rmi.org/insight/the-ba…

Incredible stat: A single container ship of solar panels can provide as much electricity as more than 50 large LNG tankers of gas – or 100 large coal ships There's many more insights in IEA Energy Technology Perspectives 2024 – here's a selection 🧵 1/7
