I met Zach Groshell at researchED Canada and told him I was trying to get his book but Amazon had low stock and long shipping times. But my wife found it on another site and got it for me for my birthday!

I am thrilled to accept this new guest article, which critically reviews Ontario Math policy, by Math teacher and coach, Mike Hastie. Pedagogy Non Grata has always been about teachers helping teachers. drive.google.com/file/d/1D88jQV…

Loved this. I’m hearing a lot about well-being and improving student sense of belonging. As David Didau highlights, teachers should focus on teaching, while developing positive relationships with students. Excellent teaching supports student well-being.

Schools should be extremely wary of AI. These LLMs are costing Microsoft and Google tons of money and they’re looking for ways to generate more revenue to offset the costs of AI. I think they see schools as cash cows. They sold us Chromebooks, and now they’re selling us AI.

An analysis of the 2003 and 2007 TIMSS & PIRLS mathematics surveys concludes "better achievement was associated with more teacher-led instruction, less connection to students’ daily lives, and—in particular—more memorizing of formulas and procedure": bit.ly/4eU9N61

*NEW* Alfie Kohn calls Cognitive Load Theory a “pseudo-scientific smokescreen.” A 2025 fMRI study shows cognitive load lights up your brain’s attention + control networks exactly as CLT predicts. Is it dogma or is it biology? Link in reply....

I've been reviewing Canadian math curricula (standards) this week. Here's a BC grade 5 outcome titled "multiplication & division facts to 100." As if this all weren't bad enough, we have "memorization of facts is not intended at this level." Grade 5! Wish I could unsee this.

High quality education increases equity. Putting low quality pedagogies on a cultural pedestal leaves us with lower academic results, for the sake of self congratulation.
