On this day in 1540, Henry VIII and Anne of Cleves were married at the Royal Palace of Placentia in Greenwich. Henry was very vocal about how unhappy he was about the marriage; he had only met Anne in person 5 days beforehand and felt she differed greatly from her portrait.

#OnThisDay in 1536 Catherine of Aragon died. For seven years the Pope refused to annul her marriage to Henry VIII. Catherine was forced to leave the court and spent the rest of her life living in far reduced circumstances until her death.

It was previously believed that Thomas Boleyn added the Long Gallery, but research has revealed that it was actually Anne of Cleves’ vision. Anne added the Staircase Gallery on the floor below, connecting the two wings of the house & the Entrance Hall.
