Looks like Global News managed to sneak some layoffs under the radar amid all the fury of Bell's disgusting cuts. Meanwhile, the CEO of Corus Entertainment (which owns Global) made $4.4 million in 2021. Sorry Jessica. You deserve way better -- we all do.

Last week, media layoffs came for Xtra. We lost 16 people across our parent company Pink Triangle Press, including several key members of our (already very small!) team at Xtra. I’m angry for my colleagues who very suddenly lost their jobs, and I’m frustrated with all of this.

Radio-Canada’s so-called “investigation” into gender-affirming care is a case study in how *not* to do journalism. It’s an embarrassing and harmful display that has trans rights advocates saying “what the fuck, CBC.” Here’s what’s going on:

A 🧵 on the Saltwire news: This is a really troubling development for local news in Atlantic 🇨🇦 and for the journalists who work harder to produce local news than you know. In my years with Transcon/Saltwire, we were asked to do more and more and more, with fewer resources.

Some personal news: After 5 years as chief correspondent in Canada, Reuters has eliminated my position. It has been an honor and privilege to cover Canada's economy and politics. I especially to thank Justin Trudeau and his staff and everyone at Bank of Canada #cdnpoli 1/

1/ 🧵I will soon pull out the stops with @HKFP's finances. We've 1 year to correct course without dipping into crisis/legal funds. We will not mess with staffing/payrises, nor resort to paywalls or intrusive ads. We made cuts elsewhere & tried to shore up monthly donors.

So pleased with this: it's the second time our election coverage has been recognized, and it's a privilege (and so rewarding) to get to put together an ambitious, critical package on the election with such a sharp team of freelance researchers, fact-checkers and writers.
