.Independent Age have found that almost 1 in 5 (19%) of older tenants are uncomfortable raising concerns with their landlords👇🏽 Every renter deserves a safe and secure home. The #RentersRightsBill is an opportunity to start a new chapter on renting, the government must seize it.

Thank you to Susan for sharing her story of the reality of becoming homeless aged 74 as a result of a S21 eviction independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-n…

We also highlighted the ‘hidden barriers’ of rent in advance requests and guarantors. Requests like 12 months’ rent in advance are shockingly common for those receiving benefits – including pensioners. The #RentersRightsBill must tackle all forms of discrimination.

According to new research, 95% of private rentals in London are unaffordable for households using local housing allowance to pay rent. 🚫 💷 This reduced availability of homes in the capital puts low-income Londoners at increased risk of homelessness. ⬇️ bigissue.com/news/housing/l…

Housing quality is a serious issue for older people - Independent Age collaborated with Ageing Better to shine a spotlight on the issue, including a blog from me on how the #rentersrightsbill can improve things for older renters ageing-better.org.uk/resources/safe…

Local housing allowance rates are set to be refrozen in April, leaving a larger gap between housing benefit and rising rents. 📊 Labour must take action at the budget to prevent older people becoming homeless, says Independent Age’s Joanna Elson. 👇 bigissue.com/opinion/autumn…

48% of older renters on housing benefit are worried about how to pay their rent. Local housing allowance rates need to be raised each April - we’re hoping for good news in #Budget2024

The investment in social housing and tackling homelessness announced in budget is very welcome. But keeping local housing allowance frozen is deeply disappointing.

Low income private renters already face £131 shortfall between housing support & actual rents With no announcement from the Chancellor that LHA will be unfrozen, this shortfall is only going to increase - making the already challenging situation private renters even worse

We're working with Ageing Better to shine a spotlight on the issue of unsafe, poor-quality homes as part of the #SafeHomesNow campaign. In her blog Policy Manager Hilary Burkitt explains how the #RentersRightsBill can improve things for older renters: ageing-better.org.uk/blogs/the-impa…

The #RentersRightsBill will bring much needed protections for private renters But this #MoneywiseMonday is looking at the rights of renters' now. Challenging your landlord can be intimidating. If you need support, call our Helpline 0800 319 6789 ☎️ independentage.org/renting-in-eng…

Everyone should have the security of a safe and affordable home - @Daniel_Hewitt is right. With over 150k children in temp accommodation, we have to see long term investment in social housing - 90k homes are needed per year to end homelessness for good. theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

Living in a cold home is a serious danger to health, especially when you're an older person struggling to pay for heating. The growing number of people in the PRS in later life need action now to make homes easier to keep warm

Work & Pensions Committee As Policy Manager Hilary Burkitt says, for many older people Housing Benefit is not providing an assurance that their rent will be covered. 37% of older private renters are in poverty. Our research projects the number of older renters to rise to 1 in 8 by 2040 if nothing changes
