Tomorrow, I will be voting against the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill. I’m grateful for the personal stories that my constituents have shared with me, both those supporting and opposing. This has been an incredibly hard decision to make. My full statement below:

The sort of thing I might have included in a drawing about the assisted dying bill, had I done one.

Caring for my dad in his last weeks was the most sacred honour of my life; death is always painful & ugly. BUT I’m deeply uncomfortable with the “autonomy/choice” framing of assisted dying bill; a symptom of the “disease of separation”, we must unlearn control & individualism.

I was a big supporter of Louise Haigh as transport secretary. Can't believe she's gone - seems really unfair - hoping she'll be back soon!

It’s an incredible honour to have been asked to take on this role. Louise Haigh was formidable. I will do all I can to ensure we have a transport system that drives economic growth, connects our communities and protects the environment. A mammoth task ahead.
