This was great fun. Won't spoiler it for all the books we talked about, but one that I hope appears in lots of stockings this xmas is Half Swimmer, Jo Heinrich fab translation of Katja Oskamp's Halbschwimmer - linked stories that read like plotting the co-ordinates of memories.

From Waugh to Pym to Frayn to David Lodge, there are few things better than a great British comic novel, with smarts and heart and truth at its core. What a wonderful writer. Do start with the Campus Trilogy if you haven't read him. theguardian.com/books/2025/jan…

Very sorry to hear of the death of #DavidLodge, one of my favourite writers since my dad gave me Nice Work in 1988. I've written about his influence on me over the years, probably for the first time in this 2015 The Irish Times piece Martin Doyle irishtimes.com/culture/books/…
