Your religion may have no relevance to your work, but it doesn't follow that your work has no relevance to your religion. Your priest is paying you the compliment of taking your work as seriously as you do; perhaps you should consider taking your religion as seriously as he does.

The first political event I remember that really registered with me as a child was the British handover of Hong Kong to China. It happened on this very day, back in 1997. I was watching it live on TV in Singapore and remember the ceremony. Prince Charles and other dignitaries

This was a deliberate choice by the education establishment. It’s no use blaming technology or anything else. Those are factors, yes, but the education establishment never fought to maintain standards. In fact it was eager to ditch them. Now, two generations on, most teachers

“the strength of that pull is ameliorated” Why don’t our judges know what words mean? It’s bad enough when they don’t know what the law means.

Brits 2025: People don't know what 'voting' for a 'bill' is. Is there any way we can dumb it down ever further? Yanks 1976: Civic education? ::stubs out an unfiltered Camel:: Get the cat who wrote Van Lingle Mungo on the blower.

Splendid, bracing stuff. I've been making a similar point about the silly "I'd give the Devil benefit of law" line for years, but this piece makes it better.

For the staffer that posted this, it makes no sense. Sorry. If reducing trade barriers is what lead to growth, then it’s not “buy local” pumping the economy, it’s free trade.

If this is true, then we shouldn't be spending that much on defence. It's that simple. By all means increase defence spending and while we're at it pare back the layers of fat Trudeau added to the budget, but adding $50B in new spending onto the existing $50B deficit is madness.

Obscure? I guess anyone in a niche is by definition obscure, but leading figures in niches aren’t what one usually thinks of as obscure. It’s like saying Connor McDavid is an obscure sports star because most people in America don’t follow hockey.
