Did you know that 2024 marks the 150th Anniversary of the founding of the Yorkshire College of Science, precursor to the @universityleeds? Well, now you do! Exactly 150 years ago the “Bradford Observer” reported: “the first session will commence on Monday, October 26th, 1874”.

Five years before it opened the Yorkshire College of Science was just a gleam in the eye of the Yorkshire Board of Education! It was developed "to supply instruction in science applicable to the industrial arts, especially engineering, manufactures, and agriculture." #histsci

Staying for the Q+A at the #ASHG24 Presidential symposium had rewards including Gregory Radick answer about the doubts about Mendel’s veracity. Points out no one raised concerns about Mendel until 1960s and the cultural happenings of the day have contributed to those arguments.

And nextdoor - the splendid Edward Baines Memorial Wing. Lovely to actually be on campus HPS Leeds - 4.5 years late! Due to lockdown, despite being a postdoc here, I never actually made it to the buildings… And great fun discussing William Whewell

One of the very best books I read over the last 12-18 months or so was Greg Radick's brilliant "Disputed inheritance", here's a brief Amazon review saying why anyone truly interested in the origins of genetics, and its potential futures, should read it amazon.co.uk/review/RU1H1Z6…
