Remarkably, despite looking at various pH indicators this year, I forgot to try the most obvious one! I have now made a video showing the universal indicator pH changes youtu.be/t0KhP1u_Rs0?si…. A definite lab favourite!

I had a bit of an editing backlog, but almost up to date now. My current favourite #Gardenindicators is the petunia extract that AngusAlchemist provided, still good after 2 years in the freezer! youtu.be/oKUwNgWFFPc?si…

#GardenIndicators Christmas edition! I bought the cranberries purely for the science and now I’ve got to make cranberry sauce from scratch! Here’s the pH profile and the RGB plot of the acidified extract neutralised with 0.1M NaOH, then adding 2M NaOH

Horrific scenes in the lab. 😱 #Parafilmdown! There will now be a stretch of mourning, #Parafilmalaise, but how do you cope long term? Do I at least get a refund?

The second #GardenIndicators Christmas edition shows the pH profile of poinsettia bracts. Just look at that cheeky pink in the RGB plot!

A Christmas tradition and the 3rd #GardenIndicators Christmas edition - Red Cabbage! Such a wonderful range of colours at different pH. Merry Christmas everyone 🎄

Home made copper(II) acetate. Cu wire in 80 mL "non-brewed condiment" (4.5% acetic acid) + 20 mL 6% H₂O₂ in a jam jar for a week. Removed Cu, added 5 mL H₂O₂, left to evaporate for 4 weeks. 1.80 g Cu₂(CH₃COO)₄(H₂O)₂ crystals + ~0.6 g in 8 mL sat solution, from 0.76 g Cu.

I had to buy some flowers for a practical at work, naturally I chose the ones I thought would give an interesting pH profile. It didn’t disappoint!

I got a nice #Gardenindicators gift this week from AngusAlchemist. A can of crushed pineapple! The anthocyanins in blackberry extract can be used to detect dissolved tin(II) in the pineapple juice. The anthocyanin/tin complexes give a lovely purple colour!

I had a cake yesterday with a small viola petal as decoration. Instead of eating it, I tested it for its pH profile😀 Beautiful colours # GardenIndicators

I’ve been testing out ‘things that glow’ for our chemistry club. A Horse chestnut branch in water just blew my mind! Thanks Andres Tretiakov for the suggestion ages ago. The others are pumpkin, sesame and fennel seeds in vodka!

#Gardenindicators is having a rare live appearance later this year. May 16th at the Nigel Botting Meeting for Teachers of chemistry hosted by St Andrews School of Chemistry supported and organised by RoySocChem Scottish Education and SSERC Chemistry details here st-andrews.ac.uk/chemistry/abou…

🎵"In your Easter bonnet..."🎵 Here's a short parade featuring my first #GardenIndicators of the year. The extraction process (serious microwavin') must have destroyed some of the pigment complex, as I couldn't recreate purple, but the anthocyanidin core has survived.
