#9: Not asking for writing training šŸ’° If you feel under-skilled at writing, ask your PI, department or grad school for funding to enrol in a scientific writing course. Many universities have funding available for professional development - you just have to make the ask!

Number 8 is definitely true. I have written more than. 130 papers I. My career but am still learning each time. Hardest part is that theses days papers are rarely just 2 authors. each combination of authors requires a different set of team dynamics to complete the task.

Sad news. David Ish-Horowicz, our colleague and friend, died on Friday. He was instrumental in discovering the genetic basis of pattern formation and a pioneer of the field of mRNA localisation. A wonderfully supportive and inspirational mentor. We will all miss him.

Hi all I am at the neurofly conference in Birmingham (uk) and having a fab time listening to great Drosophila neuroscience talks from scientists all over Europe. Organised wonderfully by Alicia Hidalgo and colleagues. We did our PhDs in adjacent labs in oxford starting 1986.

I am increasingly using blue sky social instead of X for obvious reasons to do with the nature of x’s owner. Please follow me there instead of here by joining blue sky and finding me: ilandavis.bsky.social

my obituary to my PhD supervisor and close friend David Ish-Horowicz, a lovely supportive mentor and friend for many generations of scientists and spent 10 years in my lab after ā€œretiringā€. We’ll all miss him. Development (2024) 151 (21): dev204429. doi.org/10.1242/dev.20…

elifesciences.org/articles/102... I am very excited to share with you our publication building Deep3DSIM microscope using adaptive optic. It allows imaging into an intact fly brain >130 microns with high quality 3DSIM as well as remote focusing without moving the objective or specimen.
