More dead gannets washing up on beaches due to avian influenza outbreak. Best advice if you see a sick or distressed seabird is to keep your distance and notify Irish Department of Agriculture, Food & the Marine.

Aerial surveys around Ireland’s 2 largest gannet colonies provide estimate of HPAI mortality. The arrival of HPAI at the end of the breeding season may have limited its impact on populations, but updated census a priority. #ObSERVE @OriolGP4 Biological, Earth & Environmental Sciences, UCC royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/rs…

This is absolutely bananas. There is NOTHING like this on the instrumental record. Its likely impact is probably immeasurable. But is it leading our news bulletins & on newspaper front pages? Nope.

#BirdFlu update ⬇️ We detected HPAI H5N1 among brown skuas on South Georgia in October 2023, and later kelp gulls in November. Unfortunately recent testing by a vet from APHA has now found positive cases in elephant seals and fur seals. More here: bas.ac.uk/media-post/avi…

It was a real privilege to get the platform I did on the Tommy Tiernan Show and to be able to bring Irish Wildlife Sounds to such a wide audience. It's been life-changing. It's just so uplifting to see the thirst people have for nature.

A shocking example of shifting baselines in this month’s British Birds. Up to 800,000 Bullfinches were trapped and shot EVERY YEAR in the 1950s, 60s and 70s to reduce damage to orchards. Now we are down to 265,000 breeding pairs. A fascinating paper by Ian Newton.
