#OnThisDay 1916 The first prisoners of the Easter Rising arrived in Frongoch Prison in Wales. 1,800 men were held there including Michael Collins. Lessons on Irish language, history & military tactics gave Frongoch the name of the "University of Revolution". #Ireland #History

#OnThisDay 1855 At the Battle of Sebastopol, Private John Lyons, from Carlow, picked up a live shell that landed in his trench & threw it out, saving his & many lives. For this he was awarded the Victoria Cross. In the photo below from 1867, Lyons is dead. #Ireland #History

#OnThisDay 1921 Auxiliaries Cadet Leonard French (pic) was captured & shot dead in the River Nore by the IRA in Kilkenny. His body was weighted down with chains, then buried in river mud. He was reported ‘Missing’ for several months. His body was never found. #Ireland #History

#OnThisDay 1534 Silken Thomas, 10th Earl of Kildare publicly renounced his allegiance to King Henry VIII by throwing his sword down at a King's Council. He had heard false rumours that his father had been executed in the Tower of London.Rebellion soon followed. #Ireland #History

#OnThisDay 1921 Royal Scots Private George Duff Chalmers was captured, executed & secretly buried by the IRA in a bog in west Clare. Cmdt Seamus Hennessy (pic) oversaw this. Chalmers' body stayed there for 97 years until he was reburied in Grangegorman in 2018. #Ireland #History

#OnThisDay 1775 Jeremiah O’Brien, his five brothers (whose father was from Ireland) & local militia stormed & captured the British ship HMS Margaretta at the Battle of Machias, in Maine. This was the first naval battle of the American Revolutionary War. #Ireland #History

#OnThisDay 1921 Dan Breen married Brigid Malone, a Cumann na mBan member from Dublin who nursed Breen back to health from a gunshot wound, in Tipperary with Sean Hogan as best man& Aine Malone as bridesmaid. Both men were some of the most wanted men in Ireland. #Ireland #History

Teenager Mary Bowles, from Cork, was arrested by the RIC while moving part of the local IRA’s arsenal. Mary was wearing steel body armour (pic) & carrying a machine gun, two revolvers, an automatic pistol & ammunition, all concealed under her large coat. #Ireland #History

#OnThisDay 1863 US Marine Sgt Christopher Nugent, from Cavan, lead a 6 man assault team on an enemy fortification in Florida, defeating them & destroying the fort. Days later he rescued drowning civilians. He was the third Marine to receive the Medal of Honor. #Ireland #History

#OnThisDay 1920 Captain Percival Lea-Wilson RIC District Inspector was shot dead by Michael Collins’ Squad in Gorey, Wexford. It’s said that Wilson was shot because he was the officer who strip searched Tom Clarke when the rebels surrendered after the Rising. #Ireland #History

#OnThisDay 1921 An FBI & police raid on a ship called “East Side” with an all Irish crew, in Hoboken, New Jersey discovered 495 Thompson submachine-guns which were destined for the IRA. This raid was authorised by future Director of the FBI, J. Edgar Hoover. #Ireland #History

#OnThisDay 1864 Colonel Patrick Kelly, from Galway, the commander of the Irish Brigade was shot dead as he led his men at the Battle of Petersburg. It was said that upon his death; “strong old veteran soldiers wept like children & wrung their hands in frenzy”. #Ireland #History

#OnThisDay 1921 The Thompson submachine gun (Tommy Gun) was first used in combat by the IRA. Dublin ASU led by Oscar Traynor fired on a train carrying soldiers of the Royal West Kent Regiment. Three were reported to have been injured but no deaths recorded. #Ireland #History

#OnThisDay 1921 The IRA attacked a four truck convoy of Auxiliaries in the Rathcoole Ambush, Cork. Using mines to disable the trucks, the IRA killed two Auxies & injured many more. However, the IRA soon had to withdraw due to a dwindling supply of ammunition. #Ireland #History
