This is The Fall of Babylon, from 1819. It's by John Martin, a painter whose vision of apocalypse and catastrophe was uniquely terrifying...

John Martin was born in northern England in 1789 and became a painter during his teenage years. Martin's self-stated passion was to create "sublime" art. He sought a new level of scale and awe. Sadak in Search of the Waters of Oblivion (1812) was his first "sublime" work:

Consider The Destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah (1852). The supernatural hurricane of fire seems more like something from a 21st century disaster movie than a 19th century painter.

Or Belshazzar's Feast (1820) Here you can see Martin's flair for architectural scale, too.

And Joshua Commanding the Sun to Stand Still Upon Gibeon (1816) This was his breakthrough. Martin enjoyed fame, success, and great artistic influence after the completion of this revolutionary work.
