I overheard a 16-year-old* this morning rejoicing at the fact that after today’s GCSE English Language exam, he never has to do English again. This makes me sad, as English Language/Linguistics is such a fascinating and useful subject. But the GCSE isn’t fit for purpose.

Alongside Jonathan Culpeper and isolde, I’m organising a panel at #IPrA2025: “(Im)politeness: Regional variation”. Take a look at the CfP and consider submitting an abstract - plenty of scope for exciting work at the pragmatics-sociolinguistics intersection. pragmatics.international/page/CfP2025

We had a wonderful time at graduation last week, where MA and PhD students from the department graduated. Adrian Hemler was awarded the Geoffrey Leech prize for highest overall MA mark. Congratulations to all! 🎉

Is it really true that online discourse contain more impoliteness than face-to-face? No, but there are other differences (though both demonstrate reciprocity). Check out this new article: authors.elsevier.com/sd/article/S03…
