Great recce of burned and harvested peatlands this week at Tomahawk AB with Sophie Wilkinson and Mike Waddington students as part of NSERC / CRSNG Alliance. And this happened 🥳! Such a memorable, sweet thought for my birthday!

Kicking off the #PeatMetal and Restoring Industrially Impacted Peatlands International Workshops with a tour of our NOBEL - Nibi (Water) Observatory natural and unburned peatland sites. Looking forward to great discussions on peatland hydrology, metal biogeochemistry, and restoration! #PeatTwitter

Day #2 of the #PeatMetal and Restoring Industrially Impacted Peatlands International Workshops. Touring our NOBEL - Nibi (Water) Observatory burned rock barrens, burned peatlands, & post-fire moss restoration sites. Thx to Alan and Carl for boat access support. #PeatTwitter #wildfire #hydrology

Day 3 of #PeatMetal and Restoring Industrially Impacted Peatlands International Workshops was a blast touring around metal contaminated peatlands near Sudbury. Great to show our almost ready restoration trial site and talk all things peat, metals, and restoration!

We presented our #SurvivalOfTheDeepest #peatlands poster on Tuesday at CGU We are seeking input from a wider range of perspectives on ecohydrological feedback strength as a function of peatland peat depth #PeatTwitter Details and link to a survey: mcmasterecohydrology.ca/survival.html

A beautiful evening for MAC Ecohydrology Lab’s 8th annual NOBEL Beach party! After a peaty and buggy day of fieldwork it was time for sand, beach games, and pizza on the shores of Georgian Bay. Visiting Belgian PhD student Jonas Mortelmans went canoeing for 1st time #PeatTwitter

An abrupt increase in area burned in BC - the top 5 years for area burned in the 1950-2024 period have occurred since 2017. In order, 2023, 2018, 2017, 2024 and 2021. Of course, 2024 is not over yet. More area burned during 2017-2024 than 1950-2016. What does the future hold?
