The RMS Titanic sank beneath the cold Atlantic waters #OTD in 1912.  The Titanic Memorial - designed by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney and now standing along the Washington Channel - is a tribute to the more than 1,500 passengers who perished.

I am so excited that the last chapter of my dissertation is published. In it, we investigate why crocodylomorphs seem to be so good at making it through mass extinctions but also why their responses to these events appear to differ. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/pa…

We've got a cool bronze statue to amplify for today's "Heavy Metal" theme of #NationalParkWeek. Designed by sculptor Charles Henry Niehaus, the John Paul Jones Memorial is dedicated to the naval hero of the American Revolution, not the bassist of Led Zeppelin.

In a new study, Yuanzheng Wen and a research team have detailed interactions between magnetic field lines of the sun and Mars that may help explain how Mars turned from a warm, hospitable planet into a dry, cold, and hostile environment. physics.uiowa.edu/news/2025/04/i…

It's Fossil Friday! In this archival image, Museum preparators work on a trio of Tyrannosaur skulls. With 4-ft- (1.2-m-) long jaws & massive teeth, T. rex was one of the largest carnivores of all time. It could bite with ~7,800 lbs of force (34,500 N)—the weight of 3 cars!

It's Fossil Friday! What's the tallest freestanding dinosaur mount in the world? The Museum's Barosaurus & Allosaurus in the rotunda, which stands 50 ft (15 m) tall. How does it defy gravity? The Barosaurus is constructed using casts from real fossil bones in our collection.
