'Protection cannot be something we consider for defending our critical assets. Instead, it must become integral to everything we do – it is a building block of modern corps warfighting' writes Lt Gen Sir Ralph Wooddisse. rusi.org/explore-our-re…

European defence spending has been rising for a while, but Allies won't be hitting 5% across the board in this decade without a mountain of fudge.

Shashank Joshi (@shashj) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Worth noting that if NATO allies do agree to 3.5% military spending plus 1.5% on infrastructure and defence-related spending, this is an even bigger stretch than it sounds, because the existing spending levels include a fair bit of stuff that rightfully belongs in the 1.5%.

Having set out some views on ambitions for the SDR ahead of its publication, I’ve now returned to evaluate the aspects looking at transformation of the Armed Forces. It has a clear vision as a target, but the devil is unsurprisingly in the detail, which needs serious scrutiny.

I am very pleased that our European partners -- through the EU commission -- are leveling a new round of sanctions against Russia for their barbaric invasion of Ukraine. This round is different because it is going after Chinese companies that prop up Putin’s war machine. Without

This might be the most telegraphed punch in military history. The April 2024 ALBM attack on the 30N6E radar, from outside Iran’s borders, should have created a sense of creeping dread. Yet it seems public displays of breathtaking confidence were real, not bluster

One lesson of Ukraine & Iran is that air power sets the conditions in which any war unfolds. Ukr succeeded in frustrating Russia's much larger air force, both because of its air-defence dispersal in the first day of war & Ru air force weaknesses. Iran's air-defences collapsed.

Quick 🧵 on where we are right now. Calls for de-escalation (a reflex for diplomats) are going to fall on deaf ears. Israel chose a war; Israel and Iran are on an escalatory path. If anything can push them off that path it will probably be military constraints, not diplomacy.

Operation Rising Lion has showcased Israel's conventional superiority over Iran, highlighting the importance of intelligence, surprise, and strong air and missile defence. But for now, the impact on Iran’s nuclear programme is more uncertain, write Matthew Savill and Darya Dolzikova.
