“I don’t know how much we can talk about American values considering who’s President,” says Spike Lee at HIGHEST 2 LOWEST press conference, before pretending to silence himself. “My wife said, ‘Spike! Be very careful what you say.” #Cannes2025

Asked for his prediction on the Knicks - Pacers series, Spike Lee says, “We only need four!” He says he’s missing the first two games and “we better figure something out” for how he’s going to watch tonight’s game from south of France. #Cannes2025

It has nothing to do with loving cinema or not. It’s very hard to get readers to care about festival coverage at general interest pubs. They won’t see these movies for months, if ever. So if mentioning the Oscars gets more people stoked on a Lynne Ramsay movie, let’s fucking go.

Spike Lee points out that the Pope went to Villanova and three players on the Knicks went to Villanova, so if you believe in God and numerology, “It is destined.” #Cannes2025 The American Pavilion

Spike Lee says Denzel Washington “was very moved by the love he got” Monday night with his surprise honorary Palme d’Or, and that Denzel was reciting dialogue from his films way back while his clip reel played #Cannes2025 The American Pavilion

Am an absolute sniffling wreck after watching Scarlett Johansson’s directorial debut ELEANOR THE GREAT and seeing June Squibb get her flowers at #cannes2025

Jafar Panahi’s IT WAS JUST A SIMPLE ACCIDENT is a stone-cold stunner revenge thriller, full of political anger and darkly funny — from a director who was jailed and banned from making films in Iran. Had men weeping and shouts of “Bravo.” Instant Palme frontrunner #Cannes2025

Have never cried at an amfAR gala until hearing that Rock Hudson donated $250 forty years ago, which is what gave Elizabeth Taylor the inspiration to start the organization dedicated to fighting AIDS. Hudson was one of the first victims to die of AIDS. #Cannes2025

Is this news? Michelle Rodriguez says, “We’re very close to closing down the Fast and Furious franchise,” while auctioning off the Dodge that Vin Diesel drove in FF10 at amfAR gala #Cannes2025

Adrien Brody auctions off his painting of Marilyn Monroe at amfAR gala for 375,000 EUR. And then offered to take the highest bidder to lunch. Over the years, his donated artwork has raised over 2 million euros for the AIDS charity #Cannes2025

James Franco is in Cannes auctioning off a painting called “Hollywood is Hell” at the amfAR gala. Lunch with highest bidder “anytime, anywhere” — 325,000 euros #cannes2025

Friends still on the ground in #cannes2025 say power has gone out all over the city and cut out during a reprise screening of “Sirñt.” Trains were down. Fest says they have independent power at Palais and can continue with closing ceremony. Chaos on last day of fest

Jafar Panahi has won the Golden Lion at Venice (THE CIRCLE), the Golden Bear at Berlin (TAXI), and now the Palme d'Or at Cannes (IT WAS JUST AN ACCIDENT). He is the fourth director to win top honors at all three festivals, after Clouzot, Antonioni, and Altman.

So freaking thrilled for Jafar Panache’s A SIMPLE ACCIDENT to win the Palme d’Or. It was far and away my favorite film of the fest. What a monumental achievement from an Iranian director who still made it in secret because he’d be censored if he didn’t

When I ran into Justin Chang outside the Jafar Panahi premiere, we just looked at each other and were like, "Wow, THAT was a movie." It felt so, so special to be in that room. And now it has a Palme d'Or. So excited for everyone to see it! #Cannes2025

Best #Cannes2025 party by far was the one for Neon and “Splitsville” at Lucia Beach, where the dance party was so good, Alexander Skarsgard left and came back. Molly Manning Walker who made a movie about Brits partying in Spain stood on a banquette the whole time

Ha Google alerted me to travel advice I gave to Life Kit ages ago and I stand by all of it! Always bring bug spray, tampons you like, hair conditioner (so many hotels don’t have it!), and rain gear. Leave toiletries at home and buy them on road. You don’t need 80% of them
