What’s on trial here is not one person but the idea that Palestinians can resist, remember, mourn, and celebrate their loved ones. Turning spouses, parents, and children into prisoners of administrative orders is how Israel tries to break that spirit.

It’s telling that Witkoff doesn’t explain what he finds so unacceptable. The Hamas response is essentially the same deal, except it asks for more specific guarantees that Witkoff & co won’t allow Israel to break the ceasefire again like they did in March.
