There shouldn’t be any shame for health professionals to admit they’re having a bad day (or week or month or year). I’ve done so before and will no doubt do so again. Here are my socks for this year. #Socks4Docs #CrazySocks4Docs #MH4Docs

Today is #Socks4Docs Day. A day of mental health awareness for health professionals. I purchased these socks when I was home for Christmas with the thought that they would remind me of the qualities that home… instagram.com/p/CBDVrdZHNN3/…

Excited to be part of this #RadAIchat! My name is James Hillis and I am the Director of Clinical Operations for the Digital CRO at Mass General Brigham Data Science Office (DSO). Our group’s work focuses on the validation of diagnostic AI algorithms ahead of regulatory clearance.

T1. Medical AI regulation allows the benefits and risks of AI devices to be carefully considered. It ensures only acceptable risks are taken as AI technology continues to push boundaries. #RadAIchat

T1. A challenge for medical AI regulations though is the pace at which technology is evolving. Even before the introduction of large language models, it was a challenge for them keep up with the pace. #RadAIchat

T2. Most radiology AI devices come through the US Food and Drug Administration de novo / 510(k) pathways as Class II devices. Further details about the 510(k) pathway are available at fda.gov/medical-device…. #RadAIchat

T3. A critical area for the FDA approach for Class II devices are the "lanes" that are essentially created by different regulations. They each are associated with a regulation number and have their own special controls that are created during the de novo process. #RadAIchat

T3. Computer-assisted triage devices are under regulation number 892.2080 where the Viz.ai LVO device was the de novo device. A special control requires “Results from performance testing that demonstrate that the device will provide effective triage”. #RadAIchat

T3. These lanes can also restrict devices. As an example, the 892.2080 regulation states that “the device does not mark, highlight, or direct users' attention to a specific location in the original image”. #RadAIchat

Thanks Dania Daye, MD PhD. Yes, there are key differences between the US and EU approaches to regulating radiology AI/ML devices. These differences also highlight some of the ways to optimize the regulatory approaches. #RadAIchat

T3. A group of us recently detailed many differences between the US and EU approaches (see the table below taken from nature.com/articles/s4174…). #RadAIchat
