With respect, this is madness. 14km of riparian deer fence represents both an enormous financial cost, & huge embodied carbon. All because we indulge wealthy landowners who want to keep deer numbers at unsustainable levels, and to hell with the public interest #LandReform

The nearby river still has small fragments of rainforest clinging to its banks. Nuclei for the most wonderful rebirth of wild nature, if only the sheep were gone. 🌍

There is no justification for the Scottish Government's proposed increase to the forestry grants scheme for next year, rather the opposite. Far from being a panacea large scale tree planting is making the climate and nature crises worse parkswatchscotland.co.uk/2024/12/17/how…

Three years ago, Northwoods partner Denmarkfield, began rewilding 90 acres of intensively farmed barley fields north of Perth. In the space of just a few years, new grassland habitat has helped bumblebee numbers surge from just 35 individuals to 4,056 in the same fields. 🐝🌿✨

Argaty’s crack team of tree planting vigilantes are still hard at work planting hedgerows & fencing off waterways as part of our #NatureRestorationFund project Restoring the Waterways, Reconnecting the Cores. Another hedge finished last week, 1.5 left to go before March! 🌳 πŸ’ͺ

A seldom mentioned impact of planting sitka spruce: it seeds out and becomes invasive. How much of Ireland is being engulfed in this way? Yet Irish forestry is still mostly based on this alien species, which offers nothing to nature.

My small Dexter cattle wouldn't qualify as 'megafauna', but they do fulfil some of the same ecological functions, and are the best option going here in West Cork. Managed right, they're SO much more nature-friendly than sheep. I reckon they look pretty cool, too!
