#Gabon #Africa I witnessed this growing up as a kid in my hometown of Lambarené, the second city created in 🇬🇦 (1872). They had another project in Tchibanga, in southern 🇬🇦. It was very efficient until China replaced Taiwan. Unfortunately, the Bongo regime abandoned the project.

I’m the host and producer of this documentary about the Mississippi Delta Chinese video & also cultural consultant on SinnersMovie! Ryan Coogler and his team were meticulous about the details—truly an honor to see nonfiction enter the fiction space in this spectacular way.

Two years ago, I heard that Taiwan's govt had unearthed surveillance files from the secret police of its authoritarian era. They were finally becoming open to the public, nearly four decades after Taiwan's democratisation. I wanted to see what was inside: economist.com/1843/2025/05/0…

A bit of background on Taiwan ahead of what may be an eventful week. Certainly there will be a lot attention on the action to Taiwan's central bank after Friday's TWD move. Key context: the TWD is incredibly weak 1/

My first book review! I am grateful to Angus Bylsma for closely engaging with my book. The critique is fair, and it's exciting to see how the book is sparking conversations.

Behind all of this of course is the PRC’s capital controls. Without easy access to FX and sky high domestic savings rates, it unsurprising to see pent up Chinese domestic demand for USD denominated assets find new avenues.

Harvard and other similar US universities have always served elites. The change was that they began to become a destination for elites from outside the US when the US supplanted the UK and Germany as the higher education destination of the world.

1) There's a growing effort to deny Taiwan’s colonial history by redefining Han migration as “internal expansion.” But this is Han exceptionalism in disguise. Let’s unpack why Taiwan is a settler colony—historically, structurally, and politically.

Pleased to be sharing my review essay in HSNS on “New Directions in Global Health Histories of China and Taiwan”. I reviewed Mary Brazelton, Rachel Core, Fang Xiaoping & Yi-Tang Lin’s monographs; and identified themes in global health histories. As someone who has read a lot of pop Taiwan books over the last few years, this one stands out in quality. Dawley’s retelling of Taiwanese history humanises Taiwan in a way that is desperately needed in today’s great-power focused world. It is a must read. reaktionbooks.co.uk/work/taiwan?fb…

This spring, the AHA (the flagship organization for American historians) undemocratically vetoed a resolution condemning scholasticide in Gaza -- one that originally passed with over 80% approval! AHA elections are currently ongoing through July 15. If you’re a member: vote! 1/
