I have one such story, just published by Aeon Magazine. It's about being a woman in #Physics, about being brave, making mistakes, standing up to elitists' bad behavior, and building a city of wisdom. It's about the stories we tell and how important they are. aeon.co/essays/to-unde…

“I couldn’t influence a dictator in Nicaragua, but I could traipse out to the Utah desert, fix detectors, and operate telescopes to help solve the mystery of ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays.” Let’s remember what we can do. Thx Jamie Zvirzdin and Aeon Magazine for this hope.

Also within this essay: Be mindful of who your #physics heroes are. We can't escape history, but knowing these darker stories can help us make space for additional heroes. And many more sheroes. Thanks, Albert Einstein! Aeon Magazine

Too many people find physics scary, boring, confusing, and/or elitist. Physics can be filled with joy, and I'm saying this the day after my Statistical Mechanics test. 😂 Here is my secret: Physics is actually a word problem. A story problem. aeon.co/essays/to-unde…

I started watching TNG again with my son, and it has single-handedly restored my faith in humanity. Or at least in the early 1990s 😂😂😂

Something a middle-schooler emailed us about: “A ‘combination lock’ should *technically* be called a ‘permutation lock,’ because the order of the numbers matters in permutations, but in combinations the order doesn’t matter.” 10/10, no notes.

Whoa, Bluesky really does look and feel like Old Twitter. I won't stop posting here, but I'll be spending more time there. I'm no tree hugger (Read Mother Nature Is Trying to Kill You by Dan Riskin!), but it was a bad move to kill the Twitter bird. bsky.app/profile/jamiez…

Thanks! Physics really doesn't need to be so inaccessible. Impatience and ego are usually at play, and it's something professors can fix if they acknowledge the Curse of Knowledge bias. They can start by practicing plain-language definitions using #ChatGPT or other #AI. #scicomm

At the age of 101, French mathematical physicist Yvonne Choquet-Bruhat, a pioneer in the study of general relativity, is one of the last people alive who engaged in research discussions with Albert Einstein in his office at the Institute for Advanced Study. Happy Birthday!

I have several science buddies, including my 14yo son. Also my cat. 😂 This is where, when, and how the magic happens in #physics. Friendship matters. Collegial exchange of ideas, esp. via letters, is how Maxwell, Einstein, and many others developed their ideas. #SubatomicWriting

My latest NY science column came out today (2 print newspapers, 1 online). We're facing down mysteries this year, and this is undoubtedly the most important and the most urgent one to solve: allotsego.com/citizen-scienc… #scicomm #ScienceLiteracy #CitizenScience
