A rare moment during these crazy times when we're reminded: yes, our timeline actually could have been much worse! The stories of postwar Germany and Japan show that democracy is fragile, but it can also become remarkably fast and strong once it emerges and is protected.

The "Coalition of the Willing" backing Ukraine is basically a de facto European war cabinet/ security council. Today will show if it can make Europe the geopolitical power it already is by means, but not by will. A united Europe speaking with one voice would solve that problem.

For all their values, European leaders are subordinate because their economies, militaries and politics are fragmented. For all his shamelessness, Trump is dominant because (however dismally) he speaks for one economy, one military, one political system. It’s that simple.

The European Union needs to do a better job of defending itself in a new world dominated by war and cutthroat geopolitics, former European Central Bank chief Mario Draghi warned. politico.eu/article/mario-…

Europe’s summer charm offensive has failed. Let’s review European diplomatic achievements so far this year. 2025 started with JD Vance making his famous “stepping up” speech in Munich, and alarm bells started ringing. Unfortunately — Europe didn’t even wake up, let alone step

What should NATO do now? Declare an "air defence identification zone" 150km deep into Western Ukraine, deploy military assets, and shoot down any Russian cruise missile or drone that enters. Russia has been given enough chances.

One does not accidentally launch multiple drones at Poland. This was a deliberate act of aggression. If NATO’s response is only the usual mumblings – such attacks will be normalised, and then more dangerous possibilities for further frog-boiling escalations will open up to Putin.

Impotent statements like these are why Russia feels free to attack us. This wasn’t an “incursion of drones.” Russia attacked Poland. We shouldn’t “condemn it.” We should hit Russia with serious, damaging consequences. We shouldn’t “call on Russia” to stop. We should stop them.

We must massively raise the costs of Russia’s aggression. Europe needs to consider how the Russian central bank’s assets frozen in Europe can be confiscated and made available for the defence of Ukraine. I propose this in an article in the Financial Times. 1/8

Hey Moldova, can you please teach us how to deal with Russian interference in the EU? 🤩🇲🇩🇪🇺 We have a lot to learn from you. See you in our Union before 2030! Congratulations to all the hard-working, brave believers in democracy for tonight's result.

Our leaders hope Putin will give up. He will not. Unless deterred – his escalation will increase, until a Pearl Harbour moment forces us all to realise it's war. We will then fight back half-prepared, wishing we'd listened more to the people who saw all this coming.

Then why did you prevent unblocking Ukraine's EU accession with your veto last week? It's the best form of long-term security for us and them.
