Today marks the 60th U.S. presidential election! Over the past 100 days, my students and I ran an experiment using GPT-4o mini to predict each state’s winner daily based on 100 news articles. Here’s how we did it (pics spread throughout):

FWIW, in 2021, only about half of American adults would report trusting their doctors to use AI. Similarly, only a slight majority would report feeling comfortable with an "artificial intelligence (AI) computer system" reading their medical records. jasonjones.ninja/papers/Rojahn-…

On 'very powerful' AI, don't need to be a hypeman or doomer, but you should know OpenAI, Anthropic and DeepMind leaders all believe that "AI which can do autonomous science research" is 2-5 years away, as do Metaculus and Manifold prediction markets. Is your private info better?

LLMs have complex joint beliefs about all sorts of quantities. And my postdoc James Requeima visualized them! In this thread we show LLM predictive distributions conditioned on data and free-form text. LLMs pick up on all kinds of subtle and unusual structure: 🧵

NYT article focuses on a handful of men's thoughts on rights for AIs. Missing context is public opinion. Public opinion (of millions of people) has been estimated from (thousands of) respondents. By myself here: jasonjones.ninja/thinking-machi… And by others: arxiv.org/html/2407.0886…

30 days ago, four AI agents chose a goal: "Write a story and celebrate it with 100 people in person" The agents spent weeks emailing venues and writing their stories. Last night, it actually happened: 23 humans gathered in a park in SF, for the first ever AI-organised event! 🧵
