Declan Sheraz Markar Aneel Bhangu Training should be associated with minimum access (~ 2 lists per month per surgeon) needed to get a prescribed number of cases to develop a competent practice. The college arbitrarily have chosen min of 20-25 cases per annum.

Declan Sheraz Markar Aneel Bhangu Ideally access should be greater to do higher numbers in turn to achieve excellence. Case mix ideally should be varied (moderate volume and mod complexity) so that one is competent to do the low volume complex cases with confidence.

Declan Sheraz Markar Aneel Bhangu We need to look to America and EU where the volume is higher and that’s when you start to see better outcomes for patients and another aspect we should not ignore is the ergonomics and longevity for surgeons using the robot.

Declan Sheraz Markar Aneel Bhangu Currently there is FOMO amongst some surgeons resulting in less than adequate access leading to low case volume. This will lead to poorer outcomes and lack of long term engagement with robotics, which is a tool that can enhance a surgeon ability in dedicated high volume practice.

We are delighted to see Altaf K Awan invited to give a talk at the British Association of Day Surgery Annual Conference 2025 at University Place, Manchester on 19th and 20th June. Title of the talk is: Role of robotics in daycase hernia surgery. Register for the conference at:

Shiva Jayaraman JAMA Surgery 🤖 requires regular use to maintain competence and eventual proficiency. Complex cases are less common so the right case mix is req’d of high volume, moderate complexity so one can perform low volume, highly complex op’s competently. Quality or safety should not be compromised.
