Data-driven thresholds are imperfect, & need to adjust over time as we amass new data & face new variants. But they're a start and an opportunity to be explicit about our goals at this stage of the pandemic. +Co-authors: Andrea Ciaranello, MD, MPH, Emily Kendall, @BenjaminLinas, Joshua Salomon @jsalomon.bsky.social

Great thread on how a decision model can be useful when there are things we don’t know. We often need to make a decision without knowing everything we’d like to, and models can help clarify how that uncertainty impacts the outcomes we care about.

Today in NEJM, Govind Persad (also @govindpersad.bsky.social) and I wrote about how economic evaluation can make decision-making around Covid-related policies more comprehensive and transparent. I've linked to the article here and added a companion thread below. (1/11) nejm.org/doi/full/10.10…

In Medical Decision Making , Mike Paulden Jinyi Zhu @tara_lavelle Jim Hammitt and I looked at trends in author-reported cost-effectiveness thresholds in the US (1995-2018) and their implications for discount rates for cost and health outcomes #NERDTHREAD journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.117…

So excited to share plans for a short course at Society for Medical Decision Making (SMDM) w/Dr. Meagan Fitzpatrick Joshua Salomon @jsalomon.bsky.social @ADPaltiel: Napkin Math. These days, modelers build a lot of complex, computationally-intensive models. We believe, however, that simple, intuitive ("napkin") models are more important than ever.
