"The growth of American government and the complexity of modern life gradually empowered our presidents and the tangle of administrative agencies that surrounds them. But that did not mean that Congress had to fade into the background." -Yuval Levin, understandingcongress.org/2025/05/13/con…

We are delighted to announce that Kevin Angell, a Ph.D. candidate at The University of Chicago, is our 2025-26 Elise J. Bean Oversight Fellow! His research focuses on how inter-branch competition between Congress and the presidency shapes institutional power and policy outcomes.

Enjoyed seeing this paper a while back, and really glad it is in print! Super cool data and important implications for understanding the reputational payoffs of effective lawmkaing.

This is a really cool piece! Civil Rights victories were encouraged by powerful protests and speeches, yes. But they were cemented by the hard work of legislating and coalition-building--which requires a core of dedicated (and patient) professionals in and around Congress.

Feels like these tensions are only going to get stronger -- and based on some recent work by Matt Grossmann, it sure feels like it'll be over globalization-related issues...

How many people are needed to start an APSA caucus? The longer I am in this business, the more I realize a clear need for a Political Scientists Who Fish Caucus. Amirite, Kevin R Kosar ??

J.D. providing some excellent context here. I'll keep opinions about parades to myself, but the idea that we can't better-fund the First Branch is ludicrous.

I recall being on a panel at APSA/MPSA when someone presented a paper on Senate electoral class. Does anyone (perhaps the author!) know who that was?
