Social media is allowing us to become our own Communist and Fascist dictators when it comes to free speech and thought. Why do we need a Stalin or a Hitler to burn books when we can just cancel each other and burn ourselves to the ground if we dare think differently from the mob?

If I had to sum up the week in one word, it’d be INSPIRING. Met the coolest people, learned a ton, had countless interesting research convos, and fell in love with Berlin. So grateful for this opportunity, 10/10 would recommend!

New in JEP:G with Peter Mende-Siedlecki: We often forget details of others' behavior but remember the gist. Drawing on Fuzzy Trace Theory, we find that people form social impressions in two modes that lead to very different choices about who to help or hire. hackellab.org/_files/ugd/c5d…

Always so wonderful to attend my home conference SANS — my first time as a faculty member & part of the USC community! Pic below of a USC dinner at SANS with labs/students of Social Connection Lab, USC SLAC Lab, Jonas Kaplan & Steve Read where an exciting research plan was born 👀

Excited to share new work w/ Dave Kalkstein, in press Association for Psychological Science: We find that social concepts simplify complex reinforcement learning, letting people attach model-free reward to familiar abstract roles. We note implications for RL and social learning hackellab.org/_files/ugd/c5d…

That's it for MIND '23! Thanks to this awesome group of scholars for coming to Methods in Neuroscience at Dartmouth (MIND) at Dartmouth Psychological and Brain Sciences to learn & share methods for studying Interacting Minds! And for those who couldn't come, stay tuned: we will be releasing the tutorials from this year in a Jupyter book!
