Sounds right! By default we'll probably treat the protein folding solver very differently from the AI companion language agent even if they share the same architecture and functional description. That's a problem.

Preordered! I suggest seriously engaging with this book when it comes out. Even if you think that the authors are overconfident and that superhuman AI has only, say, a 10% chance of killing only, say, 10% of the population, that would still be a big risk! ifanyonebuildsit.com

In this new interview with Scott Jacobsen I explore whether AI systems might one day have their own feelings and emotions - and whether they should be classified as legal persons with legal rights. goodmenproject.com/featured-conte…

Great news: the Supreme Court today rejected yet another pork industry lawsuit to try to force states to allow the sale of pork from crated pigs. The pork industry is now lobbying Congress hard to wipe out state crate bans through the Farm Bill later this year.

The possibility of AI consciousness is rightly receiving a lot of attention right now. But robust agency is worth considering too. Near-future AI systems will be able to act on beliefs, desires, and rational reflection. What if anything will we owe them? arxiv.org/abs/2411.00986

My new draft paper with Eric Schwitzgebel is now online! We propose and explore the "emotional alignment design policy," which involves designing AI systems to elicit emotional reactions in users that reflect their capacities and moral status. Thread below; feedback welcome!

Happy publication day to Dean Spears and Michael Geruso! After the Spike makes a compelling case for policies that can protect the human population while respecting human rights. Highly recommended for anyone who cares about our future.

we should *hope* that they associate consciousness with computation, since computation can happen in carbon and silicon alike. the scarier alternative is that they associate consciousness with silicon-based brains, excluding humans and other animals by default.

We did it!🎉The EU’s new General-Purpose AI Code of Practice now includes a "non-human welfare" clause. While not legally binding, it sets an important precedent—encouraging AI developers to assess risks to animal welfare 🐔🦐and potentially AI welfare 🤖too!
