GERD patients are worried about PPI risks, and many are stopping without talking with their docs. Risky for patients at high risk for upper GI bleeding, who are just as likely to stop as others. Check out our latest in #AmJGastro: ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/30694867

#SmartTrial Thanks to U-M ISR Dannie Almirall and Inbal (Billie) Nahum-Shani for welcoming me to their d3lab meeting! Learned tons about Q-learning--a secondary analysis strategy for SMARTs that can lead to more tailored adaptive interventions. ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23025434

We found that in a network of anticoag clinics, 45% of patients are high risk for GI bleeding. Most would benefit from either stopping unneeded ASA and/or starting a PPI. We need better systems to treat these patients. Geoff Barnes is leading the way. ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=3…

Cool comparative study from Northwestern on what happens to researchers who just miss the funding cut-off on their initial #R01 grant: ”...early-career setback appears to cause a performance improvement among those who persevere.” #ShotsOnGoal files.constantcontact.com/6edd32c5501/e2…

Be careful when stopping PPIs. New survey shows: 1⃣ Docs believe PPIs cause 5-6 adverse effects on average, despite dubious evidence of causation 2⃣ In a pt at high risk for GI bleeding, 79% would stop the PPI, despite guidelines supporting PPI use ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/32091… #PPI

Fascinating new study by Seo Baik et al: Protopathic bias likely explains the association of #PPIs with mortality. I.e., pts use them for conditions that presage death. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33453399/ @SameerDSaini Paul Moayyedi Loren Laine CGH
