When Jemma Wadham first started out as a researcher she was convinced glaciers were 'lifeless deserts' but since a discovery in 1999 it seems that glaciers 'like the soil or our stomachs' have their own community of microbes. Fascinating #geographystudent theconversation.com/life-in-the-de…

A study has revealed high levels of the toxic element mercury in rivers and fjords connected to the Greenland Ice Sheet, raising important questions about the effects of glacial melting in an area that is a major seafood exporter. Find out more: bit.ly/3firLls #research

Congrats @jonnyhawkings on this cool new paper assessing mercury flux & cycling from Greenland Ice Sheet meltwater. Dissolved Hg from SW GrIS accounts for ~10% of global river Hg flux, whilst particulate Hg is among highest measured in natural samples. nature.com/articles/s4156…

Our first #COPMinds highlight is @paul_d_bates, Associate Director of the Cabot Institute & leader of University of Bristol's #COP26 activities. His hydrological models use satellite & airborne data, transforming #FloodRisk intelligence for global management of #ClimateChange threats.
