2. Our latest study published this week in MDPI reviews the prevalence of nurse burnout in Europe before and during the #COVID19 pandemic, along with its associated factors and impact on #PatientSafety ➡️mdpi.com/2813-4524/1/2/… #WorldMentalHealthDay

1) Workforce Wellbeing 1 doctor dies by suicide every 3 weeks 1 nurse every week. I, like many, could have been one of those statistics. We have a huge workforce mental health crisis on our hands, One that 'self-care' is not going to solve.

2) Culture There's an expectation that healthcare workers just get on with it. Yet the emotional impact of care-giving is huge, the trauma & distress that come with the job... We need to acknowledge it & invest in supervision & space to reflect for all staff.

3) Patient safety Research shows that burnout in doctors is associated with poorer patient outcomes, costs more for NHS trusts, And leads to lower productivity. Investment in preventing burnout & mental illness in NHS staff benefits everyone. It MUST be a priority.

We therefore need every NHS trust to have a wellbeing officer as part of their senior leadership team. This is how change will happen. Investing in staff wellbeing is paramount to providing high quality patient care. END Wes Streeting Shaun Lintern
