It's such a simple positive step for nature – a £35 hollow brick in every new home for endangered cavity-nesting birds, especially marvellous swifts. Builders in favour too. All Labour MPs have to do is vote for a Labour MP's amendment to make it happen. theguardian.com/environment/20…

It’s absolutely bizarre to bracket nature as ‘woke’ or its protection as purely a left-wing cause. Our rivers, trees, wildlife, ecosystems & landscapes *are* this country: physically, historically, culturally. We have oak trees older than our flag, monarchy & political

Some conclusions from this dismal episode: *heritage trees need listing & strong legal protection *a sense of nature/the living world as disposable, even laughable, runs deep * “Far from being the big men they thought they were, they were rather pathetic.” theguardian.com/uk-news/2025/m…

John Constable is often at his best and most seemingly and passionately committed to the work in hand, when he is doing something almost for its own sake, and the subject itself feels to be scarcely much of a subject at all such as this cloud study in Hampstead, London, 1822.
